The Sales Team Is Busy. But Is the Sales System Working?

Sales teams need more than targets. Learn how pipeline management, activity KPIs, follow-up discipline and conversion analysis improve sales execution.

A salesperson can make 30 calls in a day and still generate very little business. Another salesperson can make 10 highly targeted customer interactions and generate significant revenue. This is why sales activity and sales effectiveness are not the same thing.

Look at the Entire Sales Funnel

A management team should understand: Lead → Contact → Meeting → Requirement → Proposal → Negotiation → Conversion → Revenue.

If revenue is falling, the problem could be anywhere in the funnel:

  • Low leads → marketing/prospecting problem.
  • Low meetings → qualification/outreach problem.
  • High proposals but low conversions → pricing or negotiation problem.
  • Good conversions but low revenue → deal-size problem.
  • Good revenue but poor collections → credit/commercial problem.

Follow-Up Discipline

A surprising amount of potential business is lost not because the customer rejected the proposal, but because the sales process stopped. Every opportunity should have: Next action + responsible person + expected date. A pipeline without next actions is not a pipeline—it is a list.
